Depends on the 14 year old. Personally it was fine for me at eleven but only because I didn't particularly mind the sex scenes. However, others may ultimately find it a bit much because of said sex scenes. But overall it's rather alright, I think.
I agree with Urimma here. The age of the reader doesn't import much. You should rather ask yourself two questions:
1- Is the reader okay with topic such as death, sacrifice, sexuality, brutal death or child death? If so, they can read American Gods with no fear because it has some, but it is not at the center of the story
2- Is the reader interested by mythology/has a certain knowledge of mythology ; or is the reader into urban fantasy, road trips and the like? This book is the kind of book you like or you don't like, often without any middle ground. So it is rather more a question of taste and maturity than anything else
Speaking as a 14 year old who just finished it:
I suppose if the reader is mature enough and doesn't mind some sex scenes, but I really wish I'd skipped the pages between Ch1 and Ch2
What do you think?
